Objectives
This course covers the key principles and methodological concepts of epidemiology. The role of epidemiological thinking in the drug development process, in clinical trials, and in post-marketing surveillance is addressed. Participants will become familiar with the fundamentals of epidemiology, main epidemiological study types, and problems of bias and confounding. The course also covers critical appraisal of epidemiological elements in health care-related research articles and clinical study reports. Lectures and discussions will be complemented by group exercises.

Fundamentals and methodological concepts of epidemiology
